Creating Space with the Invitation to Change©
Private Peer Coach
As a Peer Coach, both privately and as a volunteer for the Partnership to End Addiction, Diana has worked with parents on a weekly basis offering support and guidance to families struggling to help a loved one with substance use/misuse. It can be life changing to talk to someone who has gone through this before. By speaking with a person with similar lived experience, parents and concerned significant others (CSO) can learn how to stay connected with their loved one and get the support and encouragement they need and deserve.
“I witness with each client how beneficial family-centered, peer led and compassionate outreach is to them. We all just need someone to talk to – and who better than a trained family recovery coach who has also walked that journey. I have found my interactive work as a peer coach very meaningful and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to help parents help their loved ones.
“In my work with local families it is awesome to also refer them to other organizations for the breadth of information and resources that are available and largely unknown to them.”
~ Diana Lynn
Peer Parent Coaches are trained to help parents and caregivers:
- Understand the reasons why their child/loved one may be using substances.
- Learn ways to talk with their loved one about their substance use.
- Practice simple strategies that can help promote positive changes in their child/loved one’s behavior.
- Focus on self-care as an important part of creating change and maintaining connections in the family.
*A peer-to-peer coach uses a common experience model comprised of the Invitation to Change (created by the Center for Motivation & Change (CMC). This is a unique mix of evidence-based principles including Community Reinforcement & Family Training (CRAFT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
